Today I'm going to be doing some work with Emily, a fellow singer as she really wanted to do a duet with me however we couldn't find the time and I've now realized that I need to discover around three covers and I love the song she suggested so I thought we could do that at the gig. I was very excited as I have wanted to collaborate with a female artist on country music but especially for a performance and this is the perfect opportunity for that to happen. We wanted to play a song by a artist I had been researching called Sam Barber, he did a duet with Avery on the song "Indigo". I would also like to talk to my session musicians and my producer about rehearsal and studio time as we are very pressed and need some time to get in the studios and record my music.
Collaboration
I started of by doing some research into Artist as I wanted to get a good understanding on some artists that's music inspired my ep and music and what inspired them when it came to songwriting and why their music sounds like it does and what drew them to country music and if its similar to my story. After this I then spoke to Emily about the conversation we had the day before about practicing. When I called her I asked if she wanted to sing indigo by Sam Barber And Avery at the performance I am playing at on the 7th May. She agreed and I then asked her if she would be able to play at the performance singing and playing piano although I already new from past research the piano is quite complicated so I explained to her that it wasn't a priority and we could just do a acoustic version. After reminding her of the conversation she explained that she would like to try with piano and also without. After this I secured us a room in the CCI building which had a piano in it so Emily would have a chance to try playing the piano with the track. We then talked about the fact that if she does play piano we will have to source one which she explained that we would be able to by talking to the college as it is on a weekday we can take it down after college and then bring it back the next day and Emily explained this is what she does for all of her performances in move and Bomba with her band called Girl Band. In the video next to this text is the first practice of me and emily practicing indigo.
After this, we went to the rehearsal session and tried to figure out the song we started of by listening to the whole song together all the way through so we new the key each of us had to be in and how it works. We then tried singing along with a soundtrack and we learnt that my part was extremely low so I struggled to add volume due to this fact but we agreed when we have a microphone we can turn it up. We sang through the song together practicing the harmony's on the choruses as we wanted though to be perfect and we enjoyed it all in the process. Emily had to teach me how to harmonies as I didn't know how as I hadn't really sang with someone else properly before. After a few attempts it was really coming along and we were very happy with the result. We then thought we would try it with piano and see what would happen if we played a easier and simplified version of the songs as the chords used aren't actually very complicated but the way they played is. After giving Emily a bit of time to practice she told me she wanted to have a go and we tried after this we then focused on the build up as that is specifically piano and also lead by the piano so would be the most important part of Emily playing and would have to be the greatest part and extremely tight so we practiced that for about 10 minutes to make sure it was completely finished. We then did some takes of the song to try to have it memorized so when we then go to practicing it with Billy on guitar and George on drums we are completely ready. We played together for 30 - 45 minutes and were able to be ready with one song which is extremely impressive and meant that we saved a huge amount of time and means as a group e only have two songs we need to rehearse for he event.
One thing I had to deal with was getting a room with a piano in so me and emily could rehearse. One thing I had to overcome was this day we didnt have any practical lessons which means that my class don't have any practical lessons as over clases have priority on these rooms which mean I have to ask a teacher if we could use one of their rooms. However looking at the time table I found out that we have access to another room in the CCI building that has a piano in it. I then spoke to my teacher and asked if it is possible if I could use that room with emily to practice Indigo and I was told yes however I did get luck and next time will have to have a bit more initiative and try to book things in advance and not bring it on people as they might turn around and say sorry no i'm to busy so it's not worth the risk.
I carried on researching into Equipment and also trying to figure out how phasing works and I'm gonna ask harry my producer if this is going to affect my song in any way and how he gets rid of it.
Today was extremely helpful for the performance I have coming up on the 7th may due to the fact that I was able to get another song down for the performance as I have to get 30 minutes worth of music when I only have three songs that probably would take up half of that time so I need some covers. It was also really successful as after we rehearsed we were able to get a nearly ready version of the song and only have to add guitar which means there isn't to much to do for that song left so we can focus on other work. I was also able to collaborate with another musician which means I am meeting more people which is really good when it comes to trying to get my name out there and for the gig it means that she might bring more people which is good for me and billy. For example i'll have a better crowd for my songs so more people can find it and Billy will get more ticket sales for hs event so it's a win win situation. However i would also like to say if i was going to do today again and change anything I would have contacted billy o see if he could have come to that rehearsal session and practiced with us as that way we would have been ready to perform it and not rehearse it much before the performance.
Today I'm planning on recording a lot of stuff for my EP, these being lyrics for both song one and two and have the finished take with adlibs over the top. I'm then going to ask Billy and George if there able to record drums for song one and two but billy only need to record song two however i would like a lead track and also a possible solo so he has a similar amounts of wor to do as the rest of us. The priority was to finish song one and have a good starting pong for song two although we would like to have finished both as we have a three hour long session. My full plan for this day is to finish vocals and guitar for song one and two so that way george can come in and record the drums for both songs and have them finished and only have one song left to record. But if we're struggling just get the first song done with vocals and start the second song so we have a starting point for when we go in the studios next.
Today, what I did was I went into the studio to talk to Harry to figure out a plan while we waited for Billy to get to the studio as we did spring it on him so he needed some time to get there. We said that we could save time if I recorded vocals in the recording room and Billy recorded in the booth even though we weren't recording together it meant that when one was recording the other one could be practicing there part and that way we didn't take long switching between recording guitar and vocals. We started of by setting up the vocal mic as the person before us was using it so we asked him not to set it up and we changed it to my height and decided to use a pop shield to soften sibilance which I needed as I use a lot of exaggerated syllables down to the fact I'm singing country music which has a twangy vocal style and due to this, it means I have to really pronounce my words which can become quite overpowering and will affect the recording and mixing as Harry while be changing the gain throughout the song. The microphone also has to be placed just above mouth level as this way I’m able to get the best recording and the microphone can pick up my voice easier this way than if it was at any other height level. After setting this up in the recording room, I was able to talk to Billy and we started getting him set up in the studio booth. Due to the fact that he is playing a fast acoustic guitar part I wanted to give him a large amount of practice before recording so he was very prepared and hopefully doesn't take to many takes. We started of by telling Harry while he was setting up the mics what the metronome time is which after talking to George Lingard before the rehearsal session and he informed me that the BPM is 130 BPM. I then helped Harry set up his mics while Billy played the song to the metronome as this way we could multitask and save time as we had a lot to do in the two hour session and didn't know how long me and Billy would take especially with the parts we were playing being extremely fast and quite complicated when it comes to staying in time. We started of by recording the vocals for my first song called Left and right.
When recording there vocals for this song last time I really struggled pronouncing words correctly and you couldn't actually work out what I was trying to say. The way I was going to overcome this for this recording session was take all the syllables and focus in on them leaning into the microphone when pronouncing them. Another thing I did was actually some research into how to sing with country music slang and after watching that I was able to change my song ever so slightly but it made a huge difference. We started of by giving me a practice run so I could have my throat all warmed up so we could then record. In the first take I made a few mistakes however I wanted to record the whole song. My reasoning being was as the song is very hard to sing smoothly all the way through I planned to take different parts of recording and put them together to make a perfect recording if I did get it already, however after talking to Harry after this take he explained it would be better getting a good take I was happy with and going through and tweaking it as it then wouldn't be too planned and still sounded live as if I had done what I wanted to he explained the listener would have very likely notice and focus on that rather than connecting with the song which I really wanted to happen for my first track as it is a very heartfelt and meaningful song. After this we finally got a take I was happy with that just needed some tweaks. One of them being I had step away from the microphone so it wasn't clear and you couldn't understand what I was saying. All we did was have me thrown in two bars before and as it came to my line muted the previous part and have me re sing it. As I haven't done much recording I hadn't actually ever seen this before so took a few takes for me to get use to this and we had to do it for three sections in the song but that was me being very picky as I wanted it to be perfect. The majority of the problems occurred in the choruses due to the fact they were very low pitched which meant that I have less control over my voice which is my fault as a vocalist. This lead to me having voice cracks and struggling to get any weight behind what I was singing although when I went over it looks amazing. After Billy recorded the guitars for the second I started recording the vocals, I did a ten minute warm up while Harry set up the vocal mic in the recording booth as this way the sound wouldn't bounce of the walls and we could get a really good clean recording as I do a large amount of belting although, all I had to do was move the microphone over and use Billy's headphones as they were already plugged in and we wanted to save time as there were adlibs I wanted to get in after recording the main vocals. I then was able to get a perfect take straight away and this meant that Harry was able to go in the booth and do some 'yeehaw' for me as that's what I wanted. The videos below is of us trying things out and a recording of the tracks.
We then finished the song till I was happy and I asked Harry honestly how he felt and he fault it was great and was extremely happy with it. When then created a new logic project for Billy and the second song called cold beer buzz. I wanted one song to be up beat and a little bit of fun and I came up with the name of the song from a family friend saying whiskeys to strong and wines too sweet and that's why I drink beer so I thought I would make a song about that concept and fought a lot of people for example male listeners would enjoy it and it might gain popularity. The guitar are very classic blue grass country with sat picking style which a lot of guitarists I spoke to struggled with so after hearing this information wanted to have all of the equipment ready for when he was going to record to save time so he wasn't stressed and then struggle to record the song as I really wanted the guitar finished in this recording session. We used a overhead microphone two dynamic mics one at ever end of the guitar to capture the strumming and the picking style, We then faced a SM57 towards the whole of the guitar to capture the general sound. We didn't use a room mic as the booth in this studio as you will see in the pictures aren't actually large so wasn't going to be much ambient sounds coming from that room. As we were set up we were able to just start the song and be ready to record. We gave him one take as a practice as to save time while he did this, Harry got the levels of the microphones to make sure they were recording the correct thing and then make them all the correct levels. Billy then took his first take and due to the fact that while I was recording he was practicing it mean't that he felt extremely confident. As he struggled with the structure I stood up to the window and mothed to him the next section and put my hand up counting down the bars as that way he knew exactly when to change. He then got the rhythm section finished in one take and it was very accurate with the metronome. After this me and Harry and all of us in the studio were really happy with Billy as this meant that we could do some additional parts to the song we thought we wouldn't be able to due to the fact we were going to be short on time however after this we were extremely ahead of schedule. I explained to Billy the kind of lead guitar I wanted by showing him a video of him playing it to refresh his memory and I also showed him some examples of songs that I wanted a similar style. I explained I wanted it over the choruses to bring some more emphases on the fact it is the chorus as you cant really tell otherwise. After having a few practiced points he started recording. Before hand I said the first two takes we will record and I wanted him to improvise and if I find something I really like ill tell him to do that and we would go from there. After telling Billy this he used his imagination and was extremely creative and came up with some awesome ideas and after about ten minutes we had some cool parts and we had recorded the choruses and I was extremely happy with them. All he had to do then was his instrumental outro. This he was really struggling to get right however he was persistent and finally got it recorded and we then finished the guitar for song 2 and we were very happy as we still had over a hour in the studios for me to record the vocals.
We attempted to add some claps as most classic music like that would have procussion instead of actual drums as it was to overpowering so we decided to get the condenser microphone in the studio and all attempt to clap in time with the track for the choruses as if we did it all the way through the recording it would be really repetitive and would have probably aggravated the listener not to finish the song. However when listening to the recording back and trying to clap, we realized that there were a large amount of sections in which Billy would ever so slightly go out and then come back in time with the metronome. After hearing this we all worried as it means that as it means when George comes to record the drums he isn't going to be able to as the guitar goes out of time with the metronome which keeps everyone in time. This meant that we would have to re-record all of the guitar parts if we add drums to the track. But after listening to the song and talking with Harry I decided not to add drums as it sounds extremely full without them as is saving me a lot of time. As studio recording time is extremely scares as we are coming towards the end of college. So I had to make a executive decision and I did to solve the problem we were facing. With my adlibs I wanted some 'yeehaw' and because I didn't want to damage my voice, I asked the producer if he wanted to do it as he was very excited and he had done amazing work on my song so I thought I would give him some adlibs. What we did was he went in the studio booth and thanks to the fact that I know how to record in a studio with the basics. I then pressed record and had him try it were ever felt correct and if I wanted him to do it I was going to signal him. Although after listening to it I believe it wasn't actually very professional and even though I wanted to create a fun I wanted it to actually mean something but just make the audience happy and smile. After thinking I believed only one of them he did actually works and this was the last recording at the ending of the song so this was my way of being able to have adlibs and it be professional and I dealt with the situation correctly and was able to find a solution and Harry was still happy he could have collaboration on the song.
That recording session was extremely successful regarding the fact that there were a large amount of setbacks. Even though we had some large set backs i was able to overcome this and move on and finish the guitar and vocals for both song 1 and have a finished result of song two. This means when I go in the studios all I have to do is bass and drums for song one and all of it for song three so I need to keep on top of everything. I also feel if I was going to do it again, I would have tried to push George to record first as it would have help Billy massively staying in time.
