Roman amphitheater in Itálica
On Friday we took a trip as a program to Itálica - a nearby village that has an impressive Roman city that they have excavated. We met Stuart, the program director, at the bus station where we took a 20 minute bus ride to Itálica. We started by visiting the amphitheater where the Romans had gladiator fights and other events. It was amazing to visualize what the place used to look like, where the gladiators would be, and where people would sit to watch the events. We then walked over to the city portion, where we saw many Roman homes, like the ones we learned about in my Artistic Monuments class. There were many beautiful mosaics on the floors of the homes, just like the ones I have seen in the Roman artifacts in the city of Sevilla. I had such a great time exploring and they are still working to uncover the rest of the city that is still underground. After my visit I was feeling very inspired, so I decided to rewatch the movie Gladiator. It is such an amazing movie and it is more meaningful right now, since I see Roman artifacts every day in Sevilla. I plan to watch Gladiator 2 soon, since it is out in theaters now!
