Exploring the town of Álora
Views from the Caminito del Rey
One of the tapas from lunch
After my first week of classes I decided to take a weekend trip to Málaga, a coastal city that was a 3 hour bus ride from Sevilla. This was my first time traveling alone, but I felt prepared. I stayed in a hostel that was a 20 minute walk from the beach and it was fantastic. I booked a trip for that Saturday to tour a town called Álora, and then do the Caminito del Rey, a very famous hike in Spain. The tour was a great solution, as it included a bus trip from Málaga, lots of good information from knowledgeable tour guides, a delicious tapa lunch, and a guided hike through the caminito. I ate lunch with other solo travelers and I met people from all over the world! When we arrived at the Caminito del Rey we received helmets and our guide told us about the history and what to expect. It was a little scary at first, as the whole hike takes place in a narrow valley, really high off the ground, on a narrow wooden path. The views were absolutely stunning, and I soon got much more comfortable with the hike. We ended up walking on a suspension bridge that crossed the valley, and since we went on such a windy day it was swaying as we walked on it! The Caminito del Rey was definitely the best hike I have ever done, and I was so happy about the tour that I booked so I could feel more secure than doing it alone. The following day was my birthday and I celebrating by spending most of the day on the beach. I watched the sunrise from the beach and had mussels there for lunch. I can't think of a better way to spend my day! The bus back to Sevilla was very easy, and I returned just in time for dinner with my host family. I had such a great time exploring this weekend. I am so happy that our program does not schedule classes on Friday because it allows so much more time for traveling. I am looking forward to more trips in the coming weekends!
