Representation with Stop-Motion Animation

Representing

with stop-motion animation in your ML classroom

ESL teachers know the importance of SWRLing (speaking, writing, reading, and listening). But, viewing and representing are also important modes of communication! In addition to drawing, acting, or composing, we suggest adding stop-motion animation to your toolbox of representation activities. Stop-motion animation is a video creation technique in which objects are physically moved in small increments between individual frames. No fancy tools are needed; all you need is Google Slides!

We've created a video and slide tutorial for you and your students so you can see how easy it is to create stop-motion animation without expensive software. Check out our simple example of a turtle moving across the beach, and encourage your students to get creative by retelling a story, explaining a process, or simply entertaining their audience. Challenge them to add multiple characters and additional elements to their stories. Stop-motion animation is a way to communicate a story or process without words and encourages creativity.
