Donald Power is a professional engineer with a long-standing interest in the environment, social justice and economics. He originally trained and started work as a mechanical engineer, but during the course of his career moved into digital electronics and software. He has worked mainly in design and development in the UK, but also spent 5 years teaching at the engineering university of Nicaragua from the late 1980s to early 90s. He holds a BSc in Engineering Science and an MSc in Digital Systems.
As an engineer he has worked on the early development of optical fibre, on diesel emissions measurement, the design of microprocessor-based instrumentation, design & delivery of courses on the application of microprocessors, and the development of software for GSM and for map generation.
On his return to the UK, the neo-liberal agenda was ascendant, the deindustrialisation offshoring & hollowing out British industry was gathering pace, and the growing environmental and climate crisis was ever more urgent. In the decades since then he has pursued an interest in economics, as the economy appeared to be at the root of these problems. The book 'An Economy of Want' is the result.
