Trauma impairs the social systems of care, protection, and meaning that support human life. The recovery process is mostly based on the empowerment of the trauma survivor and restoration of relationships. Judith Herman (2002) suggests that the recovery process may be conceptualized in three stages: establishing safety, retelling the story of the traumatic event, and reconnecting with others. This section of clinical resources is organized based on this tri-phasic model of trauma healing and recovery.
