Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS)

CBITS is designed for use with groupsof students who have experienced significant traumatic experiences and are suffering from related emotional or behavioral problems, particularly symptoms of PTSD. The program uses a skills-building, early intervention approach and is most appropriate for students with moderate levels of symptoms. School Crisis Response and Intervention

This manual provides strategies for addressing crisis intervention within schools in the San Francisco Unified School District.

  • The primary purpose of “crisis response” is to help students and staff cope with painful emotions and feelings resulting from a community or school related crisis.

  • The second purpose is to assist schools to return to normal routines as quickly and calmly as possible following a major disruption of the educational process.

Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)

A Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) is designed to increase (reinforce) positive behaviors and decrease problem behaviors. The BIP may be used when a student’s behaviors interfere with the student’s learning, the learning of other students, and/or when they are engaging in unsafe behaviors. Problem behaviors can be triggered by a wide range of factors that could include frustrations at school, issues at home, or social pressures. A BIP is developed to help your child replace problem behaviors with more appropriate behaviors. This plan is developed by reviewing the results of the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA).

Positive Action is an evidence-based, integrated and coherent program that addresses the school’s entire eco-system: school, family, and community.

Bounce Back is an elementary school adaptation of CBITS (Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools). It is a cognitive-behavioral, skills-based, group intervention aimed at relieving symptoms of child traumatic stress, anxiety, depression, and functional impairment among elementary school children who have been exposed to traumatic events.
