Roberts Double-Barreled Covered Bridge
Roberts Covered Bridge spans Seven Mill Creek in Eaton, Ohio (Preble County) with 79 feet. It is the oldest covered bridge in the State of Ohio as well as the only double-barreled covered bridge in Ohio. It was built by Orlistus Roberts in 1829. Roberts Bridge is exception in the State of Ohio as well as nationally. The Bridge has three Burr Arch trusses encased in a kingpost trust. One is located in the center of the bridge and one on each side of the bridge. Roberts Bridge is one of only 6 double-barreled covered bridges found in the United States today based on the author's current knowledge.
August 5, 1986, the Roberts Bridge was arsoned. As a consequence, the bridge was rehabilitated using the historic timbers by having the charcoal edges sandblasted. The charred remnants remain in this beautiful, historic bridge today for pedestrians to walk through. The bridge was originally located south of Eaton off of SR 127. Today it rests on the western edge of Eaton, Ohio.
The Roberts Double-Barreled Covered Bridge is a steller example of a community that treasures their history. (Covered Bridges Today by Brenda Krekeler)
