Smith Covered Bridge aka Ewbank Covered Bridge spans Big Flat Rock River, which drains diagonally across Rush County from the far northeastern corner to the southwestern corner. Big Flat Rock River has a normal bed width of about 120-feet at the bridge site.
Built by the Kennedy Family, natives of Rush County, in 1877, the Smith/Ewbank Covered Bridge is a 124-foot single span resting on cut stone and mortar abutments. The exterior has horizontal planking painted in white. The Smith/Ewbank Covered Bridge was rehabilitated in 1996. The multiple kingpost truss has a double Burr arch. The roof truss as well as the lengthwise floor planking was replaced during the rehabilitation. Additional steel has been reinforced and the Covered Bridge is open to traffic as of December 2020.
It is a beautiful, well restored and maintained covered bridge. I am so pleased that Rush County hasd invested into their historical treasures. Thank you Rush County for all your time, effort and monies.
