Mechanicsville Covered Bridge crosses the Grand River and is 156-feet long. It has a Howe truss and Burr arch construction. The Burr arch is made of fifteen layers of two inch by eight inch lumber. This single massive arch is encased by the large beams in the "X" form of the Howe truss with vertical steel ties.
Built in 1867, Mechanicsville Covered Bridge was rehabilitated in 2003. The lower chords have been restored. Concrete abutments and one pier have been installed. Previously, the Bridge was a single span and the abutments were cut stone. As of the 2003 rehab, the Bridge has new siding, new roof and long windows on both sides of the Bridge. Spectacular rehabilitation installation. The Bridge stands tall with all of Astabula's historic covered bridges. (Covered Bridges Today 1989 by Brenda Krekeler)
