菱形や正三角形などのかたちをつなげていくと、平面にひろがる美しい紋様が生まれます。多面体をつなげていくと三次元的な構造が生まれます。美術家の野老朝雄はこのような原理を「個と群」と呼び、多くの作品を作り出してきました。この「個と群」の原理は、蜂の巣や、動物の体の縞模様、ウィルスの殻、鉱物の結晶など、自然の中にも見つけることができます。さらに、建物や橋などの軽くて強い構造物や、籠編み、編み物、織物、折紙、切紙など伝統的な工芸・遊びにもこのような原理が応用されています。

東京大学の舘知宏研究室では、野老と大学生とともに「個と群」の原理から様々なかたちを生み出してきました。「つながるかたち展」では、柔らかかったり堅かったり、光を反射したり透過したり、折り畳めたり拡がったり、集まったりばらばらになったりと、ユニークな機能を持つかたちを見て触って体験できます。これらのかたちから、新しいテクノロジーを生み出すのはあなたかもしれません。

Connecting rhombuses, equilateral triangles, and other polygons creates a beautiful pattern that spans a plane. Connecting polyhedrons creates a three-dimensional structure. The artist Asao Tokolo calls this principle “individual and group,” and has created many works based on it. This principle of “individual and group” can be found in nature, such as beehives, stripes on animal bodies, virus shells, and mineral crystals. Furthermore, such principles are also applied to light and strong structures such as buildings and bridges, and to traditional crafts and plays such as basket weaving, knitting, weaving, origami, and kirigami.

Tomohiro Tachi's laboratory at the University of Tokyo, together with Tokolo and university students, has been creating various forms based on the principle. At the “Connecting Artifacts,” you can see, touch, and experience forms with unique functions, such as being soft or hard, reflecting or transmitting light, folded or unfolded, assembled or disassembled, and so on. It may be you who will create new technology from these forms.

アーティファクツ

東京大学教養学部で開講されている『個と群』（文理融合ゼミナール）では、受講生が野老と東京大学の舘知宏と協働して、「個と群」の創造プロセスを実践しています。創造のプロセスは必ずしもまっすぐには進まず、つくられたもの（Artifacts）はしばしば意図しない副産物となります。このような副産物からは、芸術、科学、情報、工学、数学をまたいだ豊かな学際的研究領域が広がっています。

つくること、発見すること、問いを得ること、その問いを解くことの連鎖は、分野を超えた協働の原動力です。CONNECTING ARTIFACTS つながるかたち展では、かたちをつくることから始まる学術の連鎖を紹介します。 

Artifacts

In the seminar "Individual and Group" (Integrative Arts and Sciences Seminar) offered by the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tokyo, students exercise the creative process of "Individual and Group" in collaboration with Tokolo and the university's researcher Tomohiro Tachi. The creation process does not always proceed straight, and what is created often becomes an unintended byproduct. These byproducts lead to a rich, interdisciplinary research field bridging science, information technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.

The chain of creating, discovering, obtaining questions, and solving those questions is the driving force of interdisciplinary collaboration. CONNECTING ARTIFACTS introduces the academic research chain that begins with the act of making.

Washa Washa

On the desk with wave-shaped forms is the "Washa-Washa Zone." The works placed here can be touched. They are presented along with shapes and principles found in everyday life.

つながるかたち展では、単純な図形がつながることで生まれる、複雑な構造や機能を紹介しています。
ギャラリーでは数十センチメートルから数センチメートルの人工物を外から眺めたり手で触ったりして体験することができます。
皆さんが数センチメートルの小人になって、展示されているものを中から覗いたらどのように見えるでしょうか？
また、これらの人工物が数メートルから数十メートルのサイズにスケールアップしたとき、どのような体験ができるでしょうか？
それでは、つながる形を内側から覗いてみましょう。

INSIDE CONNECTING ARTIFACTS

CONNECTING ARTIFACTS showcases the complex structures and functions that emerge from the connection of simple shapes.
In the gallery, you can experience artifacts ranging from a few to several tens of centimeters by observing them from the outside or touching them.
What would these exhibits look like if you were a tiny person, just a few centimeters tall, looking inside?
And what kind of experience would you have if these artifacts were scaled up to several meters, or even tens of meters in size?
Now, let’s take a look inside these connected shapes.
