ハサミムシの後翅は広げた状態の1/15程度までコンパクトに折りたたみ収納することが可能です。これは昆虫界で最も効率のよい折りかたです。ここから学ぶことで、打ち上げ時にコンパクトに折りたたみ、軌道上で大きく展開する人工衛星用の太陽電池パネルを開発しようとしています。
The hindwings of earwigs can be compactly folded and stored to approximately 1/15 of their fully expanded size. This represents the most efficient folding mechanism in the insect world. Some earwig species do not have wings, but by learning from those that do, we aim to develop a solar panel for satellites that can be folded compactly during launch and expand significantly in orbit.
