折紙を折りたたむ動作を一つ一つの折り目に着目して観察すると、ドアを開け閉めするように、折り目を軸として、面が回転しているのが分かります。折紙の複雑な折りたたみ動作は、このような回転運動が互いに連動するように組み合わされて生まれます。

折り線どうしの角度や接続のしかたが変わることで、スムーズに折り畳めたり、動き続けられたり、全く動かなかったり、ぽこっとスナップしたり、少しだけグラグラしたりします。

折紙研究では、このようなふるまいを理解するため、変形しない剛体と、回転ヒンジのみで構成された「剛体折紙」という数理を用います。折り目の回転角を変数として、剛体折紙の条件式を表す連立方程式の解の性質を調べることで、折り畳める、動き続ける、動かない、スナップ、グラグラ、といった性質を理解できます。

When observing the folding motion of origami by focusing on each individual crease, it becomes apparent that the surface rotates around the crease, much like opening and closing a door. The complex folding motion of origami arises from the combination of these rotational movements interlocking with one another.

By changing the angles between creases and how they connect, you can achieve smooth folding, continuous movement, immobility, a sudden snap, or slight wobbling.

In origami research, a mathematical framework known as rigid origami is used to understand these behaviors, which consists of undeformable rigid bodies connected only by rotational hinges. 

By treating the rotational angles of creases as variables and analyzing the solutions of the corresponding system of equations, we can understand properties such as foldability, continuous movement, immobility, snapping, and wobbling.
