Gorgeous 'sets' for Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are located all over New Zealand, including of course Hobbiton at Matamata - but Wellington's Weta Workshop did most of the expert fantasy prosthetics. Housed in some grotty old sheds, Weta's project list is impressive - about 150 well-known movies, models, online games etc - so the tour doesn't actually feature much Tolkien. But don't worry - there's plenty of merch in the shop.
I reckon I'm fairly unshockable - I took the 'horror' in my stride - but I was rather creeped out by all the armour, weapons, violence and 'enforcement', including some that had been made for real-world military equipment suppliers. I didn't see much Barbie.
