Cacti, Succulents, Fuchsia, Hibiscus, Orchids, Water Lilies and lots of other indoor plants - the Begonia House is a classic warm damp greenhouse. None of these, of course, is a native species - which is just one reason why Wellington Council recently tried to shut the Begonia House down. They reckoned, however, without the fearsome Friends of the Botanic Garden, who got up a massive campaign and bludgeoned the council into a $11M reprieve. It'll still be closed for most of 2025-26, but its future looks good for a while yet.
