Otago Region

Otago is the other ‘powerhouse’ region of the South Island alongside Canterbury to its north. Together they could make the South Island a country in their own right – indeed at one point they almost did, not least because of the wealth generated by mining (particularly gold) and rich agriculture. Otago is still an important part of the economy and the general 'character' of New Zealand - and it may just have more tourist attractions than any other region.
