You can learn a lot about people from how they memorialised themselves, their families and friends - and of course the nation. 185 years of memorials here span nostalgia for the homeland, great achievements in the new country, national grieving, and more modern approaches - including 'Sunday lunch with Grandpa', and tribal and gang associations.
A rather authoritarian memorial to a Prime Minister from the 1920s. The Massey Memorial is rather out-of-favour these days, but it's interesting to see how they did these thigns back then. And if you can stand the slight unease, it's an amazing 'space' to stand in.
Whatever's said on the front of the memorial stone, the back may indicate other deeper affiliations.
