IF IT IS TO BE, IT IS UP TO ME. I AM POWERFUL BEYOND MEASURE. I POSESS PRIDE, POISE, PERSEVERANCE & THE RELENTLESS PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE FOR MYSELF...
A positive school climate depends on the participation of all students in keeping the school safe, warm, and conducive to learning. In order to recognize and support students as responsible learning community members, CHEC has established a merit system. Teachers, and staff can rewars behavior that goes above and beyond the rituals and routines of the learning community and supports a learning environment that is safe, clean, and friendly for all. Students can earn merits for focus on learning, positive interactions, contributions and volunteering to the work of the school, excellent attendance, and acts of kindness. The merits are recorded on the student ID cards through a computerized system and students can use the merits to receive free prizes (including movie passes, food passes. etc.), receive privileges, or to purchase items from the school store. Teachers are asked to document and report deeds that are aligned with our mission for celebration and recognition.
How can students earn merits?
Students can earn merits and demerit by modeling good and productive academic and social behaviors and also by being good citizens. Academically, students can earn merits by completing homework everyday for an entire week. Socially, students who display "random acts of kindness" can earn merits. Stewardship and community responsibility can earn students Citizenship Merits. These merits include any acts that keep our learning environment safe, clean, and accepting to all.
Can students lose merits?
Students can lose merits if they demonstrate the following unproductive behaviors
1. Tardiness to school or class
2. Displaying unproductive behaviors during class that disturbs the learning environment
3. Displaying unproductive behaviors that threaten the safety, cleanliness, and climate of the learning community.
Who gives students merits?
As a good faith gesture and belief in the “CHEC Way”, students will be given 100 points to start the school year. Students will begin with points in the Merit bank. Anyone can recommend a merit for a student, however administrators process the request and outreach personnel distribute the merits to the students.
