Signs that a groundhog is orphaned: Baby groundhogs need to be with their mothers in the den until about 5-6 weeks. If you see a baby groundhog without their mother, leave the baby alone and check on them after a few hours. If the mother does not return to retrieve the baby, the baby is weak or thin, if the baby shows any signs of injury or illness, or the mother is clearly dead, contact a wildlife rehabilitator.
