Term 2 with Mrs Riach

We have been reading The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali. Q Rauf which tells the story of a boy who is a Syrian refugee.
The pomegranate, features in the story and we enjoyed a tasting session today .
Primary 5 -7 are great at encouraging each other to develop their learning in all areas of the curriculum .
We also try to adopt a growth mindset when we are learning new things or find something tricky. We often discuss the power of yet .
To support our health and wellbeing, we painted and decorated some stones with positive messages to place in our garden to encourage others to keep trying to improve themselves.
We were very lucky to be able to take part in some Halloween activities in class yesterday. We dressed up, made some Halloween craft arranged by the Pupil Council, shared our spooky stories, listened to Halloween tunes, played the toilet roll mummy game and enjoyed our goodie bags. A great time was had by all!

We are taking part in an Exhibition in Kingussie Iona Gallery. The exhibition is for all the local primary schools and is called 'Lock down art'. We have been focusing on positive outcomes from Lock down and have been appreciating how wonderful our local environment has been to help us during this odd year. Many of our pictures show landscapes and activities which are part of our lifestyle in Kincraig.
We have been working hard on the genre 'FANTASY'. We have started to write a story and our focusing on character description and settings. We have some amazing characters in the Fantasy fact files.
This week we have been working hard to immerse our imagination and creativity in our Fantasy writing. We have focused on The wizard of Oz and the structure of the a good piece of writing. We have expanded our project through painting and drawing dragons and castles. Plus, we are listening to The Beast of Buckingham Palace by David Walliams -
In Numeracy, we have been multiplying by multiples of 10,100,1000 and looking at quick mental and written methods and understanding the importance of working out calculations using our times table knowledge.
Assessment week is always a tough one but there was plenty of fun learning too. We have been really lucky to be one of the first schools to have the RSPB back in. Sarah provided a weather wizard lesson where we identified clouds and skies.
We also started our Enterprise project - we kicked this off with learning about business and enterprise. Our house captains have the role of Dragons from Dragon's den and they are a pretty tough panel to persuade. Olivia has been our first dragon to offer money but with a hefty interest rate:)
I can't wait to see how the other entrepreneurs get on with the Dragons.

This is our building art ready for our window art display next week. We have been inspired by north European architecture.
Wow, what a week! Christmas has officially started this week. On Monday we made Christmas light bunting; Tuesday, Community Christmas cards; Wednesday we made hats for our Christmas meal; Thursday we designed buildings for our window art and Friday we decorated the class with our paper chain challenge.
We also started our Enterprise. The Christmas craft classroom went live and orders are pouring in. Please place your order by Tuesday.
This week we were busy improving the school grounds and focusing on The global goals - number 13 Environment
We want to reduce waste at Alvie so we are looking at how we can reduce our energy, water and rubbish footprint.
WE collected two whole boxes of rubbish so we ant this to change. WE have made a promise as a school to reduce our packaging waste and are asking parents to support us.

What a busy week - we have been learning to use a written method for subtraction and borrowing (decomposition). Plus, we have started looking at chronological reports in history and researching famous kings and queens. We also discussed friendship and voted on the top 5 qualities of friendship.
In RME we created some amazing Islamic tiles which link to maths. Plus, we had an active week with Finlay - our own Active sports co-coordinator.
P7 also met Mr Adamson from KHS.
Altnacriche with P7 - it was a wet couple of days but nothin put us off having fun. Warm clothes, water proofs and a big tent helped.
