As part of our learning about Remembrance this week, as well as learning about the sacrifices many peiple made during the World Wars, our class explored the meaning behind the purple poppy. While the traditional red poppy helps us remember the soldiers who gave their lives in conflict, the purple poppy is worn to honour the animals who also served and died during war – especially during WW1. This is the focus of Kincraig Remembrance service this year.
Horses, dogs, pigeons and many other animals played incredibly important roles as messengers, transport, protection and support. Sadly, millions of these animals never returned home. We felt it was important to recognise and remember their sacrifice too.
We created beautiful art pieces inspired by the purple poppy, using shades of purple, black and lilac to symbolise respect and remembrance. The pupils worked carefully to design striking poppy shapes and textured backgrounds, Ian Ash is displaying the art work in Kincraig community hall.
Last week our P7 pupils had an unforgettable residential experience at Alltnacriche - a chance to challenge themselves, build confidence and make memories! Throughout the week pupils took part in a wide range of outdoor activities designed to build resilience, teamwork and problem-solving. From high ropes and archery to hill walking and zip-lining, every challenge needed cooperation and trust.
It was brilliant to see pupils encouraging one another, stepping out of their comfort zones, and trying new things with such enthusiasm.
A huge highlight was getting to spend time with pupils from other primary schools in the Kingussie ASG. New friendships were formed quickly, and it was lovely watching pupils mix, support each other, and work together as a wider community – setting strong foundations before they all come together at Kingussie High School next year.
An ac tion-packed first week of Term 2 where our P6/7 pupils took part in a very exciting Science Day with a visiting Pop-Up Newton Room! This was a brilliant opportunity to engage in real world STEM and take our learning beyond the classroom. Our focus for the day was all about aquaculture and the life cycle of a salmon – a huge Scottish industry.
We explored each stage of the salmon journey, from tiny eggs in freshwater rivers, to fry and smolts making their way towards the sea, all the way through to the adult salmon returning upstream to spawn. We learned about the role of technology in modern aquaculture and how farmers monitor conditions like water temperature, oxygen levels and feeding to make sure the fish grow healthy and sustainably.
We also loved getting hands-on with interactive digital simulations inside the Newton Room. Pupils worked in teams to make decisions and problem solve like real engineers and marine scientists. By the end, we all had a deeper understanding not just of salmon – but of how science, technology and engineering work together in our everyday world. A fantastic, inspiring day!
Well done to the Event Managers who organised a brilliant Hallowe'en party for us all! Some of the activities were mini-guising, disco, games and arts and crafts!
This term our whole school took part in an exciting creative homework challenge all about Earth and Space. Every pupil was asked to design and make a model that showed either something about our planet Earth or something connected to Space, the Solar System, stars or planets.
The results were absolutely incredible!
After each presentation, pupils gave effective feedback to each other using two stars and a wish:
something they liked or thought was strong
another positive comment or strength
a wish — something that could be improved next time
The children were fantastic at using kind, helpful and specific comments. They were able to notice creativity, scientific understanding and real attention to detail.

Scottish Parliament Outreach Team visit Alvie P6/7
Today our Primary 6/7 class had a very special visit — the Scottish Parliament Outreach Education team came into school to work with us and teach us more about how Scotland is governed, how decisions are made, and most importantly… how our voices actually matter in that process.
The class took part in a mini “Parliament style” debate where pupils took on roles, discussed a policy topic, formed arguments and finally voted.
They quickly realised:
debating is not just arguing — it is listening
democracy means compromise
sometimes you vote against friends, and that’s okay
policies affect real people’s lives — not just theory
Several pupils said this was their favourite part because they felt like MSPs for the day!
Drum Fun
We had a fantastic opportunity to learn to play and perform drumming patterns with Steve from 'Drum Fun'. We learned how to keep a steady beat, create rhythms, and perform together as a group. Lots of learning, fun and smiles!
We have had a great start to the Term in Primary 6/7 with lots of focus on Health and Wellbeing and Teambuilding in our new class! We work individually, in pairs, trios and cooperative learning groups throughout the day so we all have an opportunity to see what works well for us and areas that we might need to work on. Here we are in Week 1 creating our Team Posters!
