Leadership Action Summary

Student Voice (Partnership)

The leaders Meetings were a way of collecting student voice, and being guided by their observations and experience of math class. Having meetings rather than surveys allowed us to problem solve together, and bounce ideas around. Rather than simply consulting with students, or getting them to participate, the aim is for a student-teacher partnership. The partnership has the possibility to improve the learning outcomes for all students.

Term One: Prime Climb became part of the culture of the classroom and leaders consistently reported it to be a "plus" during weekly meetings. At the end of term one we discussed the ways leaders can help students learning.

Tuakana teina (Help Desk)

Term One:

The learning habit we focused on was "connect", hence, students were constantly reminded to help each other by asking and answering questions. This worked well for most students, however, they tended to stay in their self-organised groups.

In week 10 and 11 students were studying for the Algebra Common Test. Four desks were put in a row at the back of the room and Tuakana (students confident with algebraic manipulation) volunteered to sit there to indicate they were happy to help other. Teina (students who needed help with algebraic manipulation) were able to ask questions when they were stuck. This enabled students to ask for help from students they did not normally work with. The learning was reciprocal and valuable.

Tuakana teina (Instagram)

Term One: A student leader created a 10mm group chat on Instagram to support struggling students in term one.

Lunchtime Drop-in

At the end of term one a google form was posted into the Mathex Google Classroom and into Ms Allan's four junior classes. If there is a demand for this service, and a supply of willing helpers, this will be trialled in term two.
