Many students struggle with algebraic fractions, expanding and factorizing. They freak out when variables are present in equations. I wonder if connecting prior learning experiences playing prime climb will help. Whilst variables like x, a and b are not known to be primes, we only know two of their factors, so will treat them as primes. For example we know 1x=x but we do not know any other factors of x. The circles help us see the factors, therefore we can see the mathematics working. Time will tell if this new method works for more students than previous methods I have used.
