Term One
Week 2: Welcome & Number
Monday - 4th February
What are we doing today?
- Listening to Ms Allan's welcome message about the learning habits, classroom culture and the importance of leadership.
- Selecting four class leaders who will meet once a week at lunch time with Ms Allan and the leaders of her other three classes.
- Creating a Google site which will be used to store evidence of learning, goals and reflections throughout the year.
- Joining the google classroom for this mathematics class. Year 9 Codes & Year 10 Codes.
What are we learning today?
- How the learning habits and collaboration drive success.
- Student voice helps Ms Allan provide her students with a learning environment which works for them.
- The student leaders will help Ms Allan with seating plans, behavior management, eating and drinking rules, student requests for change and negotiating homework requirements. If students do not wish to talk with Ms Allan directly, they can talk to one of the student leaders. The leaders might change during the year. The leaders might present their leadership journey to other teachers at the end of term three.
- How to create a google site, add pages, text, pictures and video.
- Where to find the course documents and resources.
- Students come with different prior knowledge and learn in different ways and at different rates. The Google Sites allow Ms Allan to see each students learning journey, and this means students are not all expected to do the same work. All students are expected to learn mathematics and to ask for help when they are struggling.
What homework do we have?
- Write your mathematical story, and vision for this year. This needs to be at least 50 words long. Sentences should start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. The questions below might help you think of what to write if you get stuck.
- What helps you feel welcomed?
- What strengths do you bring to classrooms?
- Who believes you can succeed?
- What do you expect from your teacher?
- What is your best way of learning?
- What happens in school that makes you afraid? Frustrated? Defeated?
Tuesday - 5th February
Today we will learn to play Prime Climb. This helps us connect with each other and to create mathematical connections.
Vocab: Prime numbers, Prime factorization, Operations, Multiplication, Division, Subtraction, Addition, Multiples, Factors, Strategy.
What are we doing today?
- DO NOW: 10% of a number is 10. What is the number?
- DO NOW: 1% of a number is 1. What is the number?
- DO NOW: 50% of a number is 25. What is the number?
- DO NOW: 1.5% of a number is 18. What is the number?
- Learning how to play prime climb.
- Writing a reflection on our learning on our Google sites.
- Ensuring we have all submitted the published link of our Google Site to Google Classroom.
What are we learning today?
- How to solve 'backwards' percentage problems.
- How to simply a problem in order to solve it. Thinking flexibly. If 1.5% of a number is 18, then 1% of the number would be 12. How did I know that? I saw that three times 0.5% is 1.5% and three times 6 is 18. Why did I do that? Because 1% is easier for me to work with. DO NOW: 1% of a number is 12. What is the number? Answer 12*100=1200
- Prime factorization.
- The importance of routine reflection to consolidate and retain learning.
- The importance of learning through play.
What homework do we have?
- Complete writing your reflection about today's lesson.
- Complete this percentages task. https://www.transum.org/software/SW/Starter_of_the_day/Students/Percentages.asp
- Complete this form if you won today playing primeclimb: Prime Climb Winners
Prime Climb Video to be used as a reminder of how to play the game. We will play mathematical games on Thursdays most weeks.
Wednesday - 6th February - Waitangi Day
Thursday - 7th February
What are we doing today?
- Review what we already know about fractions, decimals and percentages.
- In groups creating a google slide presentation which explains the similarities and differences between fractions, decimals and percentages. How do we convert a fraction to a decimal? etc.
- In the same groups brainstorm ideas about creating a mathematical game which would help develop number skills.
What are we learning today?
- Fractions, decimals and percentages are different ways of expressing numbers which are not "counting" numbers, or "whole" numbers.
- How to convert from one form to another form.
- There are conversions which everyone needs to remember.
- Prime Climb can help us understand equivalent fractions.
What homework do we have?
- Learn these if you do not already know them.
- One half = 1/2 = 50/100 = 50% = 0.5 = 0.50
- One third = 1/3 = 33.333/100 = 33.333% = 0.33333333333333 (Tricky One)
- One quarter = 1/4 = 25/100 = 25% = 0.25
- One fifth = 1/5 = 2/10 = 20/100 = 20% = 0.2 = 0.20
- Notice that as the denominator get larger, the fraction gets smaller? 1/100 is tiny compared to 1/2 for example.
- Reflect on your learning by writing at least 3 sentences on your Google Site.
- Find out what the infinity sign looks like. Use google.
- Complete your Google Slide about Fractions Decimals & Percentages
Extra for experts: Egyptian Fractions investigation. Use google to find out about Egyptian Fractions and explain them in your own words. Perhaps you could embed images you find to enrich your Google Site. All extra work should be placed under the "date stripe" to ensure your record of learning is recorded in the order of your learning.

- Students work at their own pace, and provide evidence of their learning on their Google Site.
- Screen Shots of Transum Work (just before collecting the Trophy) provides a wonderful record of learning when combined with a reflection on the learning. This will become routine very quickly.
- In Ms Allan's class there is always something more to do - you are never "finished".
- In Ms Allan's class you are not expected to complete every task that is set.
