James B. Talmage, M.D., FIAIME, FACOEM
Dr. Talmage is a graduate of the Ohio State University for both undergraduate school (1968) and medical school (1972). His orthopedic surgery training was in the United States Army.
He is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and in Emergency Medicine.
He retired in April 2016 after 14,154 days as a treating physician in Orthopaedics and Occupational Medicine.
Since 2005 he been an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Division of Occupational Medicine, Department of Family and Community Medicine at Meharry Medical College in Nashville..
He is a Fellow in, and Past President of, the International Academy of Independent Medical Evaluators.
He is a frequent contributor to, and the Associate Editor of The Guides Newsletter, which the American Medical Association publishes to update and to help explain the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment. He was a reviewer for the 5th Edition of the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment. He was an author/contributor to the 6th Edition, and a member of the Errata Committee. He has written and/or edited for the AMA a number of companion texts to the AMA impairment Guides.
He is co-editor and a chapter author for A Physician’s Guide to Return to (2005), and Guides to the Evaluation of Work Ability and Return to Work (2008), and Guides to the Evaluation of Disease and Injury Causation, 2nd Edition (2013) published by the American Medical Association.
Since 2010 he has served on the Editorial Advisory Board for The Spine Journal, published by the North American Spine Society.
He is a peer reviewer for Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and The Spine Journal..
He is a consultant to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, serving on the Medical Exam Work Group (2009) and the Test Development Panel (2012-2017).
In 2013 he was Acting Medical Director for the State of Tennessee Division of Worker’s Compensation. In 2014 he became Assistant Medical Director for the renamed Bureau of WC.
He teaches in Physician CME courses for IAIME, AAOS, ACOEM, SEAK, and the TN BWC.
