The Grade 9 Outdoor Education Unit is designed to provide students with an immersive experience in kayaking, where they will learn the essential skills needed to paddle safely and effectively. The unit will follow the American Canoe Association (ACA) Level 2 Essentials of Kayaking curriculum.
The program will be delivered over a period of 6 weeks days and will include a combination of theoretical and practical instruction. Students learn the basics of kayaking, including paddling techniques, safety protocols, and equipment handling. They will learn how to navigate different water conditions, and how to execute turns and manoeuvres. Students will also importantly practice rescue techniques to be able to help themselves and others in need. One of the final days of the unit will have students work together to plan and execute the trip, practicing their navigation, communication, and decision-making skills.
The grade 9 students have an incredible 9-day camping experience where they work together in teams to navigate a significant portion of Phuket's coastline. The journey is designed to have the students paddle a distance cumulatively from Ao Por Pier to South Kamala Beach, covering over 70km with various stops along the way. The students will use the paddles they crafted themselves during their Technology and Design class, which adds a personal touch to the trip.
During their expedition, the students will not only have an adventure but also dedicate a day to a mangrove planting service project, the space they will have spent so much time in and giving back to the community. They also spend a day amongst the picturesque islands of Phang Nga, taking in the beautiful sights and sounds.
The journey is a culmination of a lot of preparation from across the semester, where students train and develop skills in camping, kayaking, and leadership ability in their Experiential Learning class. The students will be able to put these skills to the test on this incredible expedition.
Throughout their journey, grade 9 students will be able to further develop their personal responsibility skills and through this experience, they will learn how to take ownership of their actions, make responsible choices, and be accountable for their decisions.
By practicing personal responsibility, the students will be able to develop important life skills that will serve them well beyond their expedition. This camp experience never fails in helping create a positive and supportive environment where everyone will feel valued and respected.
