The Grade 6 Outdoor Education unit of hiking provides students the opportunity to explore and interact with the natural environment in a safe manner. Throughout this unit, students will learn a variety of fundamental skills that will enable them to navigate and appreciate the great outdoors.
One of the key skills that students will develop is the use of a compass and map reading. They will learn how to navigate using a compass and map, as well as how to interpret maps to better understand the surrounding landscape. Additionally, students will learn how to effectively prepare and pack for outdoor excursions, ensuring that they have the appropriate gear and supplies for their adventures.
In addition to these technical skills, students will also learn about the importance of teamwork and roles within adventurous teams. They will learn how to communicate effectively and work together to achieve common goals while also developing leadership skills and personal responsibility.
The Grade 6 Outdoor Education unit also emphasizes the importance of being environmentally responsible while enjoying the great outdoors. Students will learn about the flora and fauna they may encounter during their outdoor adventures, as well as how to interact with these environments in an ethical and sustainable manner. This will include following the principles of Leave No Trace (LNT), which emphasizes minimizing impact on natural environments and leaving them in their natural state.
The Grade 6 students experience an unforgettable outdoor adventure at the stunning ‘Our Jungle Camp’ in Khao Sok National Park. The students sleep in basic cabins which provide a rustic and authentic experience in the midst of nature.
Throughout their stay, the students participates in a range of outdoor activities that allow them to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the park. The highlights include hiking through the lush jungle, where they are able to admire the stunning scenery and observe the abundant wildlife that surrounds them. As they hike, the students learn about the importance of respecting and conserving natural habitats.
In addition to hiking, the students also learn valuable jungle survival skills such as building shelter, making fire, and purifying water. They also enjoy swimming in the cool waters of the river, and kayaking along the meandering waterways. These activities not only allow the students to engage with nature but also encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and personal responsibility.
One of the most exciting experiences for the students will be the night safari, where they will have the opportunity to observe nocturnal animals in their natural habitats. This will be a truly unique and unforgettable experience that will allow the students to fully appreciate the wonder and mystery of the natural world.
