M.A.N.T.A: the Marine Animal and Nature Trust Association, is a service project led and operated by passionate students dedicated to promoting the preservation and protection of local marine and coastal habitats. The organization's ultimate goal is to make a positive impact on the environment and the diverse array of marine life it supports.
M.A.N.T.A achieves its mission through a multi-faceted approach, including advocacy, research, and conservation efforts. The students work tirelessly to raise awareness and educate the community on the importance of preserving marine and coastal ecosystems. MANTA's conservation efforts involve practical measures to reduce the impact of human activity on the environment and they also conduct extensive research on the local marine environment as well as getting their hands dirty in regenerating vital mangrove forests.
The M.A.N.T.A Coral team offers a unique program for students that combines diving and marine conservation. Through the program, students will have the opportunity to work towards their diving certification through PADI while actively participating in coral reef monitoring efforts in Phuket.
As part of the program, students will join the M.A.N.T.A Coral team on regular dives to collect data and monitor the development of Phuket's coral reefs. The team documents their dives by capturing footage, which is collated and shared with other coral reef monitoring databases. This data is crucial in understanding the health of the reefs and making informed decisions on how to protect them.
In addition to research, the M.A.N.T.A Coral team is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of coral reef conservation. They believe that education and outreach are key to ensuring the long-term survival of these ecosystems. Through the program, students will have the opportunity to learn about the threats facing coral reefs and what they can do to help.
The M.A.N.T.A Mangrove Team is dedicated to raising awareness about the critical role of mangrove forests in our local ecosystem. To achieve this, they have established a school nursery where they grow seedlings to help restore degraded mangrove habitats.
In addition to nurturing the seedlings, the team organizes regular mangrove reforestation activities, they work with volunteers to plant the seedlings in areas where mangrove forests have been destroyed. By doing so, they hope to restore vital habitat for wildlife, and promote carbon capture, which is crucial in mitigating the effects of climate change.
The M.A.N.T.A Mangrove Team is passionate about educating the community about the importance of mangrove forests. Through their educational efforts, the team hopes to encourage people to take action to protect and restore mangrove forests. By promoting awareness of their importance, they hope to inspire a sense of responsibility and stewardship towards these valuable ecosystems.
The M.A.N.T.A Guardians investigate sustainability issues facing our local environment at UWC Thailand and the greater community of Phuket. They find out about issues regarding waste management, marine ecosystems, mangrove forests and rainforest dwellers. This activity promotes students to collaborate and become advocates for a more sustainable future. Some current and past projects include:
Trying to reduce food waste in our school
Finding solutions to reduce waste and to prevent dangerous items being put into our landfills and incinerators
Setting up recycling areas and Informing others of how to use them responsibly
Trying to reduce waste by refilling whiteboard pens and reusing them
Analyzing the UWCT energy audit and taking action to reduce electricity wastage
M.A.N.T.A Guardians empowers students to make decisions and take action for a better future for all.
