KUOW currently struggles with diverse user engagement, and this project aims to attract and retain younger and more diverse audiences. For example, out of 140 survey respondents, 9 were under the age of 35. Our sponsor, KUOW, states that they struggle to recruit and retain audiences on their mobile app. They feel in particular that they are not reaching the audiences representative of the geographic region they serve. Our liaison at KUOW speculates that this may be due to stylistic and usability issues with the app (such as outdated designs or poor navigability). To determine the root cause of KUOW’s audience recruitment and retention challenges, we are investigating the app’s performance, as well as the attitudes and habits surrounding news-seeking for young people in the Pacific Northwest.
