Lighting Retrofits

Desired Outcome:

Reduce energy used for lighting while maintaining adequate and safe lighting levels

Before

Light fixture with 40 watt globe shaped incandescent bulb

After

Light fixture where incandescent has been replaced with new 7 watt LED bulb, similar in shape and brightness

Steps

  1. Select appropriate replacement bulbs

  • All bulbs, fixtures, and controls will be appropriate for the intended application (e.g., enclosed, orientation, dimmable, potential for breakage, indoor, and outdoor)

  • All bulbs, fixtures, and controls will be selected to provide the brightness and light quality required in that application (e.g., task lighting, trip-and- fall hazards, nightlights)

  • Light/lamp wattage should not exceed rated wattage of fixture.

1.a Notice: Location rating

  • Fixture should be approved for Damp Location (might have contact with moisture) above tub, shower, or sink.

  • Fixture should be approved for Wet Location (direct exposure to moisture) Outside lights etc.

1.b Notice: Energy Star rated

  • All light bulbs installed must be Energy Star Rated

2. Replace standard light bulbs

  • Replace all standard light bulbs as directed by work order(s) with an LED equivalent


3. Replace non-standard light bulbs

Replace non-standard bulbs in vanities, flood lights, chandeliers, and other light fixtures as directed by work order(s) with their LED equivalent.


4. Replace and air seal can lights

Replace recessed light bulbs as directed by work order(s) with an air-tight LED equivalent.

4.a. Remove old bulb and trim

  • Remove old bulb and trim ceiling so finish surface is smooth.

  • If gap is very large between fixture and finished surface consider caulk or 1-part foam.

4.b. Install new LED trim kit

Install new trim so that it fits securely in the existing can and flush against the ceiling

4.c. Interior air sealing with gasket

Install new trim so that it fits flush against the ceiling with a gasket between the trim and the ceiling creating an air-tight seal around the trim, OR...

4.d. Interior air sealing with caulk

Use caulk to create an air tight seal between light housing and ceiling

4.e. Install new trim flush to ceiling

Seat firmly against finish surface to ensure gasket seals.
