1. Detector type

• Must comply with ANSI-UL 2034.

• Utah WAP program guidelines require that new detectors must have a digital display with test and reset button.

• Alarms must have a locked battery compartment and be powered by a long life lithium battery.

• Detector shall have a 10 year manufacturer warranty.

2. Remove old detector

• Remove all existing detectors that are older than 4 years or inoperable.

• Look for an installation dates on device or battery.

3. Document install date on detector

• Write the date of installation on the label of the new detector.

4. Install new CO detector

• Install CO detector(s) near bedrooms. On floors where floor plan has bedrooms separated by a living area or distance further than 10' additional. CO monitors should be placed so 1 monitor is within 10 feet of each bedroom.

5. Ensure proper location and clearance

• Be sure to maintain 6 inch clearance from the ceiling.

• Don’t install detectors within 15 feet of gas ranges or combustion devices.

• Location and clearance specifications may vary depending on manufacturer, see product specific installation instructions for additional guidance.

6. Test alarm

• Test newly installed detectors to ensure proper operation.

7. Client education 

• Leave owners manual and educate client on detector operation and maintenance.
