Before
Unventilated Attic
After
Attic Roof Ventilation
Steps
- Roof vent
Follow steps 2 - 3b as applicable to roofing type.
2. Asphalt roofing
Steps 2a - 2g
2a. Positioning vents
Position vents evenly across roof, below the ridgeline so that vents can only be seen from one side of the home,
The top of the vent should be between 1 and 2 feet below ridgeline.
Ensure that vents are positioned so that you will not be drilling through any rafters.
2b. Pilot hole
Drill pilot hole near the center of each vent.
2c. Outline opening
Follow manufacture instructions to determine the size of the diameter opening.
Mark outline of the opening.
2d. Cut hole
From the exterior, cut out the hole for the vent.
Take care not to cut any structural members or plumbing or electrical lines.
2e. Pry and trim shingles
Gently pry up and break shingle tab seals around the top half of the hole
Trim shingles to allow for the installation of roof vent flashing.
Verify fit
2f. Install vent
Place roofing sealant on bottom of the flashing
Tuck the roof vents upper flashing under the two upper rows of shingles and slide into place
leave the bottom of termination flashing on top of shingles
Secure to roof using 4 or more roofing fasteners. Top fasteners should be installed under shingles.
2g. Seal vent
Use sealant to adhere shingles to the top of the vent flashing and to fasten them back to the roofing.
Cover nail heads with roof sealant.
3. Metal roofing
Follow Steps 2a - 2c and 3a - 3c where applicable
Wherever possible avoid adding ventilation to metal roofing.
3a. Install vent
Lay a bead of silicone down and place malleable flashing around vent
3b. Seal termination
Secure with screws every 1" and silicone around edge.
4. Soffit vents
Follow Steps 4a - 4e
4a. Install baffles
Move insulation away from soffit where soffit vent will be installed.
Install baffles to prevent insulation from falling on top of vent and prevent wind-washing.
Baffles should extend upward along the rafter to at least 4 inches above the finished insulation level.
4b. Outline opening
Measure and draw opening for soffit vent.
Opening measurements must be at least 1 inch smaller than the vent size.
4c. Cutting hole
Cut and remove soffit on inside measurements.
4d. Apply sealant
Apply a bead of appropriate sealant around edge of this opening you have cut.
4e. Securing vent
Fasten soffit vent using nails or screws.
5. Gable vent:
Follow steps 5a - 5f
5a. Identify vocation
Follow instructions in work order and Identify where to install the vent on gable.
Note the location of structural members, and plumbing and electrical lines.
5b. Trace hole
Locate where to install the vent on the exterior of the home and trace outline of duct avoiding structural members and utilities.
5c. Cut hole
Determine vent diameter and cut hole in exterior wall slightly larger, but not more than 1/4" larger, than the outer diameter of the vent shroud on the termination.
Take care not to cut any plumbing or electrical lines.
5d. Install flashing
Whenever possible, install flashing under cladding
5e. Install vent
Position vent termination flush against exterior. Orient to allow damper(s) to close when not in use.
Secure to house using 4 or more exterior grade fasteners
5f. Seal termination
Seal gap between termination and exterior of home with exterior grade caulk to prevent water intrusion.
Notice: Screen
Vents must have screens, with 1/4 to 1/16 inch opening.
This is to help prevent pests, snow and rain entering through the vents.
Vertical vents must have louvers to deflect rain.
Attic Ventilation Standard
Adjustments to attic ventilation shall meet the current requirements of the IRC.
The IRC requires that the minimum net free ventilating area shall be 1/150 of the area of the vented space.
EXCEPTION: If you have equal parts high and low ventilation area shall be 1/300 of the vented space.
Attic vent types will be made of corrosion-resistant material for their specific locations.
Powered attic ventilator will not be used.
