PATIENT BEHAVIOR EMERGENCY
Behavioral Emergency Defined
A behavioral emergency is defined as a situation or event where an individual is engaging in verbal threats, physical aggression (to self, others, or property), or other behaviors with the potential to cause harm to themselves or others, and de-escalation strategies have failed.
Procedure
This procedure is to be used to ACTIVATE the Behavior Response Team to respond to behavior based emergencies for clinic patients and research participants. This procedure is to be used in the event of escalating or potentially violent behavior, if verbal de-escalation has failed or is not appropriate.
Basic Actions
Behavior Response Team will be activated by Clinic or Lobby desks
Follow any assigned response role
Avoid the area until “All Clear” announced
Responder Actions
Activating Behavior Response Team
Action Steps:
Activate the Behavior Team if a Behavior Emergency is observed.
If the situation requires discretion or you are unable to activate the paging system call the Front Desk 612-626-6440 (66441 for on campus calls) and request assistance,
“I need to activate the Behavior Response Team”
Share location-(example-MIDB Clinic, RM 17)
If you have access to a landline phone and are authorized to activate the paging system Follow 1.4 Using MIDB Paging System and announce,
“Attention--Attention Behavior Response Team to (provide specific location-(example-MIDB Clinic, RM 17)”

Responding to Patient Behavior Emergency
Action Steps:
After the Behavior Response Team is activated - assigned BRT team members should immediately respond to the incident
BRT Lead will announce their role, and direct care for the escalating and/or aggressive patient (subject).
BRT Responders will take appropriate action to support patient care according to Additional Behavior Response Team Policy & Procedure Resources
The Behavior Response Team Lead will continuously assess and make the decision to call 9-1-1 If patient/visitor is unable to be de-escalated and if the situation escalates to where the patient could harm them themselves or others
The Behavior Response Team Lead will announce the “all clear” to the BRT, Clinic Staff, and MIDB Operations via the Front Desk once the situation is considered controlled.
Additional After Action Steps
Follow Actions to Take After an Emergency AND,
BRT Responders will follow additional After-Action Steps according to Additional Behavior Response Team Policy & Procedure Resources
