Most rooms only lock from the inside—a locked room will show a red “occupied” label, an unlocked room will show a white “vacant” label.
All rooms used during research sessions must be thoroughly cleaned before leaving. If a mess occurs during a research session that requires carpet or upholstery cleaning, please contact the MIDB front desk at 612-626-6440 (after hours/weekends: 763-760-4794). To ensure a rapid response please note the room number and type of fluid that needs cleaning. If needed, there is body fluid clean up powder in room 2-180 available to help with smell and absorb fluid.
Please do not reserve rooms 2-184, 2-188, 2-190 (Therapeutic Discovery 1), & 2-191 (Therapeutic Discovery 2)
A layout map of the CNBD can be found here.
Having trouble with any CNBD technology or equipment? We want to know!
Use our new Technology Request Form to report any equipment problems or requests such as software installations.
Backup Freezer Space
In cases of freezer power outage or other freezer emergencies, all refrigerated samples can be moved to the backup freezer located in the MIDB loading dock. Researchers are responsible for moving their own study samples. Coolers can be provided by the CNBD for transportation. If you have any additional questions about backup freezer space, contact the CNBD (cnbd@umn.edu).
Camera System
There are 21 cameras within the CNBD. Users can interact with the CNBD camera system via Milestone XProtect Client, accessed through HST supported devices.
To be added as an individual user or create a lab account, please contact cnbd@umn.edu. New users need to sign a consent form and complete training.
Please refer to the Milestone Camera Software Manual for guidance on how to use the CNBD camera system.
Testing rooms with activated cameras: 2-191, 2-177, 2-171, 2-163, 2-162, 2-161, 2-159, 2-155, 2-153, 2-151, 2-150, 2-149, 2-147.
A diagram of activated cameras and camera placement within each room can be found here.
Handheld cameras are located in storage closet 2-148.
MIDB Resource Closet
As part of our commitment to research and community welfare, families participating in our studies have access to our resource closet.
Located conveniently on the first floor, adjacent to the front desk, our resource closet is stocked with a variety of necessities, ranging from diapers, toothpaste, sunscreen, clothes, etc. To obtain supplies, simply ask research participants to complete a request form, indicating the items they require. A staff member from your study should then promptly gather the requested items and prepare them for collection. We have bags in the resource closet for this.
To ensure efficient inventory management, we kindly ask research staff to utilize the QR code located within the resource closet. Scanning the code will direct you to a user-friendly Google survey where you can indicate the supplies taken. Your input is invaluable in helping us maintain our inventory and continue supporting our community effectively.
At MIDB, we understand the importance of accessibility and efficiency in accessing essential supplies. Join us in our mission to empower families and contribute to valuable research endeavors.

Requesting CNBD Space and Equipment
Prior to initiating a new study, researchers should submit the MIDB Request for Service Form
MIDB Hubs review the application; decision communicated in 2-3 weeks
Once approved, if research suite space is needed (for storage and work space), the Investigator must complete the CNBD Suite Request Form
Once the request is submitted, the CNBD will review the request and allocate space based on current usage and need
Only studies that will actively run in the CNBD will be allocated research suite space
CNBD will assign suite and cabinet keys via RFSS
Researchers should obtain keys from the MIDB front desk once notified
If your study requires freezer access/storage, please complete the Freezer Storage and User Agreement
Once the request is submitted, the CNBD will contact you regarding next steps (i.e. signing a contract and completing OCEASOFT training)
Reserving Testing Rooms and Equipment
The CNBD uses the CTSI Portal to reserve rooms
When reserving rooms on the CTSI portal, please include researcher name/contact phone
DO NOT INCLUDE PARTICIPANT IDENTIFYING INFORMATION (PARTICIPANT NAME OR ID)
Studies may want to consider setting up a study contact number through Google Voice
For visits that occur outside of business hours or on weekends—the building will be locked, so researchers will need to meet their participants at the front door or in the parking ramp and escort them to the experiment space
Instructions for using the portal can be found in the scheduling manual.
Instructions on how to view CTSI Daily Reports can be found here.
CTSI requires that all portal users complete training on Canvas in order for access to be granted. Please complete the CTR Portal Scheduling System User Guide-001 course prior to requesting portal access from the CNBD.
Reserving the 3T Scanner
3TD / Mock Scanner Scheduling
CMRR and CNBD policies apply. Please use the CMRR calendar to book the 3TD scanner and the mock scanner. The CMRR calendar must be used for all piloting, set-up, and tear-down time. If your study is using CNBD test rooms for consent, exams, etc., please continue to schedule those rooms on the CTSI portal.
Other information regarding the 3TD scanner can be found on this resource guide.
Touchdown Spaces
Touchdown spaces are open, collaborative areas inside the MIDB. They will contain computers as well as work space for laptops and other materials. Inside the CNBD, touchdown spaces will be located in 2-142 and 2-130 (spaces on either side of the atrium). However, there are touchdown spaces located throughout the entire building—touchdown spaces do not require reservations.
CNBD touchdown spaces also house general office and cleaning supplies. The CNBD printer and copier are located in 2-130.
