General Building Emergency Procedures
FIRE EMERGENCY
Procedures for common fire hazards require following evacuation and shelter/refuge-in-place procedure. Fire hazards are found in most occupancies and are not associated with any special occupancy. Smoking, trash, electrical appliances, storage, and heating elements are common to most occupancy types. Significant hazards could be the result of mechanical failures, mechanical technician accidents, and weather events
Basic Actions
• Evacuate if instructed, if a fire alarm is triggered, or if you see signals of a fire
• Call 9-1-1 and 612-626-6440 as soon as able
• If unable to evacuate, stairwells are temporary areas-of-refuge
Responder Actions
All MIDB personnel must follow these expectations when signs or signals of a fire hazard or emergency is detected:
Evacuate if ordered by overhead public announcement
Evacuate if an audible fire alarm is triggered
Evacuate if you see a fire or smoke
If unable to evacuate, stairwells are temporary area-of-refuge
You should only consider using a fire extinguisher if you are safe from smoke and that the fire is not between you and your only escape route
Contact the PSECC 9-1-1 Dispatcher by phone calling 9-1-1 to request Fire Department assistance
Update the MIDB Front Desk at 612-626-6440 if it does not put you in danger
