Abstract:
The article examines the essence of the category «translation competence of a future specialist in the field of law», clarifies its definition and composition. Since it is a complex formation, its structure includes linguistic, text-forming and technical constituents and readiness for professionally oriented foreign language communication in this sphere. It is emphasized that this concept is directly related to the ability to an effective language intermediary in the process of mediated bilingual interaction in the field of law through the transformation of an oral or written text in one language into a text in another.
Attention is drawn to the features inherent in legal discourse, particularly its linguistic and stylistic ones and characteristics determined by the nature of law, and therefore the main problems that a higher legal education student encounters at the initial stage of the formation of his translation competence are outlined which are as follows: difficulties associated with mastering the use of discursive formulas and finding an adequate equivalent when translating didactic texts or audiovisual materials; obstacles due to the differences between the Ukrainian and Anglo-American legal systems, and, consequently, the partial mismatch of legal concepts, which makes full equivalence of terms impossible and causes lexical asymmetry; the lack of opportunity for students at this stage of studying a legal foreign language to get acquainted with the vast majority of special legal disciplines and, accordingly, their lack of understanding of certain legal terms even in their native language, while one of the main verbal features of the aforementioned discourse is its saturation with such lexical units.
Taking into consideration the importance of the communicative approach to teaching a foreign language for specific purposes at higher educational establishments, the dependence of the effectiveness of the process of forming the translation competence of future specialists in the field of law on the proposed learning methods and techniques is demonstrated: problem-based (partial search) and collective-group training («Brainstorming», «Microphone», «Sentences to finish», «Decision tree»), discussion («Choose a position» («Opinion scale»), «Experts’ meeting») and gaming (language and speech games) are presented. A number of didactic exercises are suggested, implementation of which allows to practice various translation strategies.
Keywords: translation competence of a future specialist in the field of law, readiness of a future bachelor of law for professionally oriented foreign language communication, foreign language communication, foreign language training, legal discourse.
