Abstract:
The article briefly analyzes the theoretical foundations of the problem of forming social competence of an individual and proposes appropriate content, forms, methods and means of implementing this pedagogical process in English lessons. The essence of social competence in various contexts is specified. Its structural dimension is presented from the perspective of social skills (life skills that contribute to social health; interpersonal skills), the classification of these skills by groups is represented ‒ effective communication skills, empathy skills, conflict resolution skills, confident behavior skills, and teamwork and cooperation skills.
The importance of a person’s developed social competence is emphasized from the perspective of obtaining individual benefits and from the perspective of ensuring the development of society. The features of the social competence of student youth are characterized, and its integral nature is emphasized. It is noted that the problem of forming students’ social competence is actualized, among other things, by the need to prepare young people for effective functioning in today’s changing social conditions.
The thesis is substantiated that an English lesson, provided the appropriate approach is taken, can become a «platform» for the implementation of both interdisciplinary and intra-disciplinary dimensions of the formation of students’ social competence. The author’s proposals regarding the content and methods of forming social competence of student youth in English lessons are presented, among them: exercise «Listen ‒ return»; informational note on tolerant behavior; exercise «Labels»; vocabulary work entitled «Agreement, disagreement, evaluation; discussion «Advantages and disadvantages of social networks»; study of Ukrainian proverbs, sayings, and words from schedrivok translated into English, in terms of content related to the problem of social health; message «Listen ‒ understand ‒ interact»; role-play «Conflict at work: how to resolve it»; exercise «I-messages»; exercise «I know how to say “No”». The titles of authentic (Englishlanguage) films, cartoons, and literary sources dedicated to the topic of social competence of children and youth are presented, which can be used to diversify the content of English language learning.
Keywords: English language, learning, social competence, social skills, students.
