For this year, Simscale helped the UFPR Fórmula team by providing a platform to perform CFD simulations more quickly and accurately, without relying on very powerful computers since they were done in the cloud.
The partnership implies in a positive way in the competition tests, but here we will give greater emphasis to the design. Comparing with the presentations taken in previous years, the one that will be taken to this competition will have more accurate and reliable data. This was possible because we were able to carry out the simulations, especially the 3D of the entire car, with more details and without having to sacrifice quality for what our computers were capable of processing. This has all improved the quality of the team's simulations since the last year and, even though it has not yet been possible to validate the results, the fact that simulations have been carried out with better established boundary conditions and better constructed meshes has already favored us and helped in the tests we will have. The evolution also came not only through the simulation platform itself, but also through the training of members through a course available on the Simscale website, specifically aimed at CFD simulation of FSAE and FS vehicles, and a forum with a lot of information to take doubts when necessary.
A proposal developed this year in the combustion car was the elaboration of wing elements with a variable angle of attack. Thus, the wings have two configurations: a main configuration that generates more downforce for events such as Enduro, Skid Pad and Autocross, and another with reduced drag for the Acceleration test. The results obtained by the simulations indicate a reduction of approximately 25% in the drag from the main configuration to the one with low drag. Furthermore, later lap time simulations, using the aerodynamic coefficients, indicate that the elaborated set can reduce the lap time in an Enduro race by up to 1.7s, compared to the car without the wing set.
