Jump Start/TOPS Tech Pathway

Course Requirements

Students earning a Jump Start/TOPS Tech diploma must have 23 Carnegie units as indicated below. Only courses taught in Terrebonne Parish are listed.


English Requirements - 4 Units

  • 1 Unit - English I

  • 1 Unit - English II

  • 2 Units (choose 2) - English III, Business English, Technical Writing, or English IV

Math Requirements - 4 Units

  • 1 Unit - Algebra I

  • 3 Units (choose 3) - Math Essentials, Business Math, Financial Literacy, Geometry, Algebra II, Algebra III, Advanced Math Functions and Statistics, Advanced Math Pre-Calculus

Science Requirements - 2 Units

  • 1 Unit - Biology I

  • 1 Unit - Chemistry I, Environmental Science, or Physical Science

Social Studies Requirements - 2 Units

  • 1 Unit - US History

  • 1 Unit - Civics

Health/Physical Education Requirements - 2 Units

  • 1 Unit - Physical Education I

  • 1/2 Unit - Physical Education II, Marching Band, Extracurricular Sports, Cheer, or Dance (Student must be in the activity a minimum of 45 days to earn the credit.)

  • 1/2 Unit - Health Education

Jump Start Electives - 9 Units

9 Units will come from the following:

  • Jump Start School-Based Electives - Law Studies, Speech, IBCA, BCA, Cooperative Marketing, Principles of Business, Entrepreneurship, Quest for Success, EMR/EMT, Virtual Workplace Experience I & II, Intro to Maritime Careers and Opportunities, Food Service/Culinary

*1 unit credit must come from Journeys to Careers, Education for Careers, Quest for Success, or JAG

*Courses that count towards an academic requirement cannot also count towards the requirement of 9 Carnegie credits for a Jump Start Pathway.

Scheduling Guidelines

  • Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors must carry a full schedule (Exception: Juniors in Marketing may get out after their 6th period class to go to work as part of the Marketing curriculum.)

  • Vocal and Instumental Music must be scheduled the full year in order to participate in Choir or Band.

  • Only 4 Units of Physical Education count toward the 24/23 units needed for graduation.

  • Honors courses may only be scheduled if a student has been placed in the honors program based on placement guidelines.
