NURSING ASSISTANT (3 UNITS—MUST BE JR. OR SR. & PLACEMENT BY VO-TECH ONLY)
Course requirements include: Junior or Senior who is at least 16 years of age; passing grade in Biology I; an overall GPA of 2.0 or above; as well as an excellent attendance and discipline record. This course provides training and a foundation for students interested in all medical careers. Students learn how to take vital signs (blood pressures, temperatures, pulse, & respiration), how to bathe patients, transport patients, and how to monitor health status. Students will spend 12 weeks doing clinical rotations in the area hospitals and nursing homes. Students may have the opportunities to observe surgery, heart cath lab, and emergency room and delivery room procedures. While performing patient care all facets of nurse assisting will be explored. Students will test at the end of the school year for State Certification as a Nurse Assistant.
ALLIED HEALTH (2 UNITS—PREFERENCE IN SCHEDULING TO JR. & SR.) Must be taken in Combination with Nursing Assistant.
In this course, students will learn basic nursing aide skills, glossary and medical terminology, have guest speakers and take tours of medical facilities. Home care for children and relatives will focus on bathing, using equipment like scales, lifters and wheelchairs and learning to check blood pressures and temperatures. CPR and basic first aid will be taught. These students will do rotations in elementary school settings.

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY (1 UNIT) Medical terminology is designed to develop in the students a working knowledge of the language of medicine. Students acquire word-building skills by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots, and abbreviations. Utilizing a body systems approach, the student will define, interpret, and pronounce medical terms relating to structure and function, pathology, diagnosis, clinical procedures, and pharmacology. Common abbreviations applicable to each system will be interpreted. Knowledge of medical terminology enhances a student’s ability to successfully secure employment or pursue advanced education in health science.
Students can earn a Certified Nursing Assistance certificate upon completing curriculum set forth by Louisiana Health and Hospitals and Clinical hours at Long Term Care Facility. Students will also be required to pass Nursing Exam administered by Prometrics Proctor.
