Artist Statement

The painting is mirrored off of a collage that I made. The style of it is abstractive, its name and layout are closely linked together. I was inspired by a quote, “You are a ray of light that shines into my darkness, even if you don’t belong to me; I still think that you are wonderful”. I feel like this quote puts an image of a sad but lovely story of a couple. It's like "I'm willing to be the background that highlights your beauty", therefore, I have the two colorful images in the middle, and the main background is a darker tone that highlights the color.

For the creation of the collage, I used household magazines. I used a scissor to detach the sections from the magazine and used glue to attach the pieces on the piece of paper. I painted my painting just like the collage I made. I used acrylic paint to put on the colors and used materials to create the details.

To begin the painting, I first used a pencil to roughly sketch out the borders and shapes of the collage. Next, I started painting all of the darker backgrounds. I started with the plain dark ones then finished the one in the top right corner last. Though it's difficult to see, there are vertical wood patterns on the very left section. To put that on, I used a fan paintbrush and lightly brushed a darker tone onto the dried paint. For the top right section, I specifically painted that section when it's wet, I layered paints. Then I painted the colorful sections. For the clouds that were supposed to show, I figured that using cotton to put on the colors was the method that looked the most similar. Lastly, I lightly patted on the wet colors to blend them; to make them look smooth.
