Assemblage Sculpture

Wheat from Flower

Foam block, petals, hot glue, tissue paper, cardboard, and cotton.

Artist Statement

In this art sculpture, I was inspired by a Chinese agronomist Yuan Longping. He had developed the first hybrid rice varieties in the 1970s. And he died on May 22, 2021; the day I started this project. Therefore I want to do something related to wheat. This is a sculpture that shows wheat in a rose flower vase or can also be wheat growing out of the rose vase.

For this sculpture, I have built it off of a carved block of foam. I have glued on petals from roses on to the foam. And I have used cardboard and little cotton balls to make to "wheat" that is attached to the foam. I have also attached some tissue paper as the straws that's usually around the wheat.

I began the sketching out the idea of the sculpture on the big piece of paper, to sketch it out in real life. My idea started with a bouquet of wheat, it is the annotated sketch on the left of the sculpture. I have made the "wheat" from the idea of the bouquet of flower. I hot glued the little cotton balls on to the tip of the cardboard, making it look like wheat. Then I moved on to the attach of newspaper, in order to get it to look like a bouquet of flower. However as I did, I felt like I don't like how it came out. Then I decided to change the idea to gluing petals on to the foam, adjusting it to look like a vase. Therefore, I glued on fake petals on to the foam. The final result came out better than I thought it would, it looked more colorful than before. I like this idea better.
