Artist Statement

This is an artwork of a crab named Geoffrey. It's a carb that I caught when I was fishing with my grandfather at the dock. It was a random thought of taking selfies with her, and realizing that one of her leg is not there anymore. Hope new ones will grow soon! After the picture taking, I set her back into the ocean.

In this piece of artwork, I used the gridding technique again. By breaking the full image in to one inch square, I can see the details clearly and draw then out correctly in the same scale. In this work, I used charcoal pencil and black ink, and tools like erasers to help.

First of all, I began with drawing out the grid in the same scale of the image. Then I started drawing with charcoal on the top left corner. The reason why I decided to start from the top left is to prevent my hand from smudging the paper. I used charcoal the whole time to completely cover the paper. Lastly, I used ink to finish up the dark spots on the paper.
