teapot

for this project we were tasked with creating a teapot that could be either functional or nonfunctional, as long certain design aspects are met, such as having a handle and a spout. i decided to create a snowboard going through a stump, as at the time i had recently knocked over a small tree after hitting in snowboarding in my backyard (i didn't sustain any injuries). although to go through with this design it had to be non functional, which i was fine with since i nor anyone else in my family drank tea. i first used slabs to create a cylinder for the stump of my pot, and then used coils and shaped them to create the stumps around the trunk to really solidify the fact that it was a stump. i then created a thinner slab and shaped it to look like a snowboard. from there i cut it in half and attached one half to either side, giving the illusion that the snowboard was going through the stump. they would also act as my handle and spout. then for the lid i just made a circular slab and engraved subtle but noticeable rings to again drive home the fact that it was a stump. after everything was put together and fired, i started glazing. i used PC-30 for the stump as it created a really good brown color, then created small designs on the snowboard, using yellow, pink, light blue, and black glaze. in the end, i think the project came out really well and i like how it looks. the only setbacks were that the roots would sometimes bend or break when i put the stump into the bag to keep it from drying out, but i improvised and used a wood board to help the stump keep its shape, which worked out very well, as the stumps remained intact.
