artist research project 2

For my second research project, i chose Hayne Bayless, a studio potter who works mostly with his hands and often uses slab construction for his pots.

he was born in 1952, in the USA, but now lives in Ivorytown, Connecticut, and teaches workshops all over the country and abroad. his interest in pottery first started in high school, when he began using an old potters wheel and kiln he discovered in the back of a classroom, collecting dust. however, he never had any formal instruction in ceramics other than an instructor in Tokyo, and ended up getting a degree in journalism after 12 years in college, including multiple different major switches. his interest in clay reemerged though, and in 1992 he quit his journalism job of 10 years and began making clay pots. he only uses handwork techniques such as pinching and coiling, except for slabwork and extrusions. he has won awards for his pots in prestigious competitions such as the Smithsonian craft show in Washington D.C. and the Philadelphia museum of art craft show.

i chose him because i think his pots and the designs are very cool and i love how they look. his pots are also something i would want to make a pot in inspiration of and they work with the design i had in mind for this project.
