history coil pot

For this project I researched old pots made thousands of years ago to first get an idea for making my pot. It was an old roman vase that came out at the top which is clearly shown in my pot. It also had carved out designs in the middle which I replicated to an extent, but instead painted my designs as carving would've been too time consuming. The pot was all black with yellow highlighting the designs in the middle, which I took inspiration from, but, since I didn't really like how the black looked on the pot I opted for navy blue, a color I like much more. I used the coiling method to build my pot and then smoothed out the coils after every 5 or so. Once I finished the pot I moved on to the designing and painting of the pot. I used pencil to draw the designs I wanted for my pot as pencil comes out when fired in the kiln. I wanted to have the base color not be shiny with the designs shiny so i used a semi-matte glaze (SM-29) for that, but i wanted the designs to be shiny so I used a yellow, pink, and green glaze for the designs. (HF-167, C-60, and C-47) I chose to use flowers for the design as i'm planning to give this to my mom for Christmas and she both likes flowers and likes to garden, plus I just thought they looked cool and fit the pot. I think the pot came out successful, I really like how it came out, the glazes and the design looks really good, and I think the shape of the pot also looks good. The only thing I wish I did better was the symmetry of the pot. One side is a different shape from the other and I think that takes a bit away from the pot but I also don't think its the most noticeable so I'm fine with it. Painting all the designs was also very time consuming but there's no faster way to do it and it looks really good so it's worth it.
