artist research project

For our research project, I chose Craig Hartenberger, an abstract artist who uses architecture and designs and patterns as the inspiration for his art.

Craig was born in 1990, in the USA, and currently lives in northwest Arkansas. He received his BFA (Bachelor of fine arts) in ceramics from Missouri state university in 2013, and his MFA (Master of fine arts) in studio art from Kent state university in 2020. He has shown work in a variety of exhibitions around the world; the USA, Denmark, Mexico, Taiwan, and Australia among others.

He crafts all of his sculptures by hand, and appears to use a variety of techniques, like pinching, slabs, coiling, and wheels. He doesn’t use glaze, as he likes to go for a rock like look. He instead applies colorant to his clay, and when it dries, he sands the clay down.

I chose this artist because his work stood out from others. He created so simple but such cool sculptures, and i was drawn in more when i saw the rest of his creations. He creates more abstract art and i also like to create abstract art, which is another reason why i chose him.
