Artist Statement

The idea that sparked this artwork was the 2 artists, Andrew Goldworthy & Mark Titchner. I chose Andrew Goldworthy because he does all of his work with nature & that’s what I wanted to do, I wanted to draw scenery. Then for my second artist I chose Mark Titchner because he incorporates words & messages into his work which i also wanted to do. finally combining those 2 I made a landscape of mountains & the world around it including a message.

I used graphite for most of the piece, the trees, cabin, & in the mountains is graphitw. Secondly I used charcoal, the outlines of the mountains & river, the small rock on the river side, the clouds & overall shading is charoal. Lastly I used green sharpie pen & regular sharpie pen for my lyrical message flowing in the river.

First with this piece I made the mountains, just putting them in the back because it looked right. That then led to making the trees & figuring out where the waterline was gonna be. The hardest part was figuring out where I wanted the body of water since the lake was what was gonna change the perspective of the piece. I decided to make the water a flowing river in the middle of the page, looking like it was coming towards you. I did most of the piece with graphite, other parts charcoal & the writing in sharpie because in Andrew Goldsworthy's work there were holes in some of his pieces because of a friend he had recently lost. The hole to me was his representation of how he felt for a while so not only did I use graphite because it would be gray & give off the same vibe/feeling, but because I can relate to him with it.
