The Ruddy Ducks

9 by 12 inches

Acrylic on Canvas

The main idea of this artwork was the two ducks. They are ruddy ducks, I chose a male and female. Having both genders would allow me to add more colors, the male has a chestnut and bright blue beak, and the female has more dull colors. Having two ducks also allowed me to show them in different stances, the close up ducks is swimming, while the other one is flying. These ducks inspired background around them as well. The water is marshy with tall grass to fit to their habitat. Another main idea that guided this artwork was realism. I tried to be very specific, I used realistic colors, and I tred to make realistic textures. You can see the water has many different tones, and the grass has many strokes. While realism and the ducks guided this painting, arycilic paint changed it greatly. The paint isn't the best when trying to make realistic images. I tried my best to make it realistic with small details.

For this painting I used canvas. I had to cut it to size, and make sure it fit the dimensions. I then used acrylic paint. This came in primary colors along with black.

The process to create this included many things. I started with a sketch, one with different positioning of the birds. I then moved onto making sure I knew where the horizon line was, and correct scaling for the birds. I used simple shapes to help them look realistic. Afterwards I started the painting process. I had to add many layers starting with the sky first, then the marsh, and finally the water, and birds. I made sure their were fine details, and I tried my best.
