The main idea that guided this artwork was death and mystery. Starting with mystery, this painting's tones are darker. The tints of the colors show the mood. Dark and mysterious. The unknown red substance leaves viewers questioning, which also adds a level of mystery. There are fantasy-like features such as the portal and death ghost, all providing puzzling odd vibes. Moving onto death, this painting radiates it. The dark sky with birds seems unlucky. The scythe and dark transparent ghost seem evil. The red pool of "blood" is often associated with death and pain. The portal is dark as well. Overall, this painting's main idea was death and mystery.
The materials used for this painting were watercolors, a graphite pencil, and a sharpie. The watercolor is the main material and covers the majority of the painting.
I created this artwork with the three common phases. Sketch, paint, and adding finished touches. My first sketch started as the ink blotch being a hole in the wall. After various attempts of drawing and trying to make it look realistic, I realized something needed to change. A friends suggestion gave me the idea of turning it into a grim reaper or death ghost. Once I had my final sketch, I started to paint with watercolors. After finishing, I used a sharpie to outline certains objects to make them more distinct.
Artsonia Response: Artist Statement
One of my favorite parts of this artwork is the transparent Grim Reaper. It looks almost like a ghost. My least favorite part of the artwork is an uneven paint texture from poor technique in watercolors. My inspiration started with the hole in the wall, a friend's suggestion turned it into my painting now. If I were to change it I would probably not include the small portal next to the Grim Reaper. I think it looks out of place. Some concepts I learned were how to make a 3D wall and add some dimensions to my painting. Something that surprised me was the way it turned out. I like the outcome and I thought it would turn out worse. To create this artwork I started with a pencil sketch, then added water color, then using a thin Sharpie I went back and added finishing details.
